All About Hawai'i Kai

Hawaiʻi Kai, a picturesque residential community on Oʻahu's southeastern coast, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and modern amenities. Originally part of the traditional Hawaiian ahupuaʻa of Waimānalo, the area was known for the expansive Maunalua fishpond, or Keahupua-O-Maunalua, which was the largest on Oʻahu. This fishpond was integral to the local ecosystem and culture, supporting aquaculture practices that sustained Native Hawaiian communities for generations. (Wikipedia)

In the late 1950s, industrialist Henry J. Kaiser transformed this region by dredging the fishpond to create the Hawaiʻi Kai Marina, envisioning a master-planned community that combined residential living with recreational opportunities. This development marked the beginning of Hawaiʻi Kai as we know it today—a blend of suburban comfort and island lifestyle. (https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com)

Things To Do In Hawai'i Kai

Beyond its residential appeal, Hawaiʻi Kai boasts a variety of attractions and activities. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the scenic trails of Koko Head Crater (bring your water!) or enjoy water sports at Maunalua Bay, including kayaking, paddle-boarding, and parasailing. Sandys Beach and Makapu'u offer picturesque seascapes. While these waves may looks smaller on the sand, Sandys beach has one of the highest number of back & neck injuries in the world. "When in doubt, don't go out". Alternately, the nearby Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve offers a protected marine environment teeming with diverse sea life, making it a favorite spot for tourists to safely snorkel and for marine education.(Hawaii Life)

Places To Eat In Hawai'i Kai

Culinary options in Hawaiʻi Kai cater to a range of tastes. Roy's Hawaiʻi Kai, established by renowned chef Roy Yamaguchi, serves innovative Hawaiian fusion cuisine with stunning marina views. Moena Cafe is a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. Their Kalua Pork eggs benedict is to die for! For a more casual dining experience, locals frequent Island Brew Coffeehouse for artisanal coffee and light fare.

Our Biased Opinion

Kelly and I have lived in Hawai'i Kai for many decades now and wouldn't have it any other way. We're not too far from town, but just far enough away from the hustle & bustle that town can bring. That said, morning traffic is no joke. If work/school starts at 8, be prepared to leave your house by 6:45 AM to avoid traffic. The climate is warm & dry, yet rain comes in quite frequently. We love the community feel of this region. We can take our dogs to the well-maintained Hawai'i Kai dog park in the evenings and wake up for dawn patrol to see the sun rise over the ocean in the mornings when we feel up for it. Kalanianole Highway is a nice & flat (albeit slightly boring) running path for me as I train for the next Honolulu Marathon. Even though I went to Mid-Pacific Institute, it also boasts an award-winning public school: Kaiser High School.

Hawaiʻi Kai's unique combination of historical significance, vibrant community life, and natural beauty continues to make it a sought-after destination for both residents and visitors seeking an authentic Hawaiian experience.
